1900年，八国联军的炮火攻陷了北京城。在这一年，胡同里的郑家诞生了2个新生命。一个是郑家的少爷郑奉时（王同辉 饰），一个是郑家车夫的儿子贾富贵（陈刚 饰）。同龄的二人一直长大，虽是主仆关系，且性格各异，却情同兄弟。热情奔放富有浪漫气息的奉时追求爱情自由无心过问家业；而富贵则颇有做生意的天赋，且本分、上进和隐忍。二人的不同性格，让他们走上了不同的路。从清朝末期走向民国，经历军阀混战和革命，而后是抗战、解放到新中国的诞生。 他们经历变迁中的中国，遭遇爱情、亲情、友情的冲击，经历一连串矛盾交织的选择和生死离别的痛苦。但最终，九九八十一难经历完后，奉时和富贵这对老朋友老兄弟走过近百年的岁月，九九归一。
